1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona
Registration Number: EU taxes paid Chassis Number: 15013
The first cars to bear the name of Enzo Ferrari appeared only 60 years ago, but in that time they have built a legend for delivering uncompromising performance from their V12 power units whilst clothed in some of the most exciting and elegant Italian coachwork designs. From the earlier 275 GTB/4 a natural development was the larger engined 365 GTB/4 (commonly known as the Daytona after the 1-2-3 victory in the 24 hour race of 1967) and this was the swansong for the successful front-engined berlinetta series.
The Pininfarina designed, Scaglietti-built body of the 365 GTB/4 coupe was deliberately styled to look aggressive and the uncompromising mechanical specification ensured its success in the very demanding sports car market.
Despite this it still managed to convey an aura of unsurpassed elegance even in Ferrari terms. The 352bhp delivered by the race-bred engine was mated to a five-speed rear transaxle mounted in a welded steel tubular chassis frame. Independent road tests gave a top speed of over 170mph in standard form, which in the early ‘70s was an amazing feat. Such capability confirmed the 365 GTB/4 as the last and fastest in the long line of competition-bred front-engined Ferrari grand touring cars.
Built in December of 1971 and imported in early 1972 through Bill Harrah`s Modern Classic to Ferrari dealer Griswold and Company in Berkeley, California. Richard P. Schram of San Francisco bought this car new, and sold it to Ron Spinali (also of San Francisco) in 1972. In total, this car has had only two owners, one very long term with 34 years of ownership. Johannes Huwyler of Dino Motors has carried out the routine service work and currently the car has only 43,313 miles on the clock.
Mechanically the car is phenomenal. The engine sounds great and has fantastic power, with smooth delivery and excellent oil pressure. Second gear syncro is excellent, both warm and cold. All gauges and switches are fully operational and the suspension is soft and compliant with the brakes stopping the car effectively. The steering wheel is properly aligned and the car tracks true and straight. The original Dinoplex ignition boxes have been replaced, but come with the car. The factory air pump and original hood support shocks are still in place and the correct Ansa exhaust is fitted.
The panel gaps- doors, boot, and bonnet, are impeccable throughout. Likewise, all the gutters are straight and even. Both drivers and passenger doors shut crisply. The gasketing, including original window seals, are all very good along with all exterior chrome, stainless trim, and lenses which again are all original. The interior is indicative of a time capsule. The seats, door skin, and console leather are all original and excellent. The original factory dash remains and shows no discoloration or shrinkage with the headliner like new. The footwell carpets have been covered their entire life and are like new. Even the wing window latches, a common weak point on Daytona’s, are both attached.
The engine compartment is nicely detailed and complete with the hood pad which is in as new condition.
The car is supplied with jack and jack bag, all owners’ manuals, customer information card and supplements, book holder, clear and mesh grille covers, special custom knock off torque nut, knock off hammer, a large file of bills and receipts, the owners log book for all work performed to date starting at 9,000 miles and EU taxes paid documentation. Finished in the suitable ‘70s factory colour scheme of metallic brown with beige and black leather interior, this is perhaps one of the most original of Ferrari’s highly prized Daytona currently on the market.
