Ref 52:

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300S Coupé

Registration Number: EU registered                      Chassis Number: 188011-55-00020

The post-war Mercedes 300 series marked a return to the production of luxury cars for the German company. The cars had classical pre-war styling with well proportioned lines at a time when futuristic fins were the major influence. Aimed at the sports and grand touring market, the 300S was produced in low numbers, some 560 being manufactured between 1951 and 1955. The 300S models were sought after when new; despite being three times more expensive than a Cadillac; and they are no less desirable today. These sophisticated cars featured state of the art mechanicals. The sturdy chassis was of tubular construction and was fitted with fully independent suspension with coil springs and servo-assisted drum brakes. The 3 litre straight six engine produced some 100bhp and was mated to a four speed manual transmission, with which the 300S was capable of reaching speeds of 100mph. The almost square bore and stroke gave the engine very efficient and smooth characteristics. With this mechanical specification and its well appointed interior the 300S provided the ultimate in comfort and fast touring. The separate body was available in three styles, coupé, cabriolet and roadster.

We are advised that this 300SE Coupé has enjoyed only three owners and covered a mere 103,000km from new. In the vendor’s hands since 2006, it benefits from thorough servicing and extensive refurbishment carried out that same year by his personal mechanic which included re-commissioning the engine; overhauling the fuel injection, ignition system and brakes; replacing ancillary drive belts; reconditioning the interior woodwork and leather upholstery; replacing all the carpets (including boot) and much more besides. (A full listing of all the work carried out, plus an inventory of parts purchased and their costs, comes with the car). The refurbished interior retains a delightful original patina, while other noteworthy features include a clock, period Becker radio and electric antenna.

The car is offered with sundry invoices relating to previous ownership; assorted original and period documents; original Hirschmann warranty booklet; original Becker warranty booklet and address list; instruction manual; a photographic record of its re-commissioning (on CD) and Belgian registration papers. A fast touring automobile in the tradition of the legendary 540K, the 300SE was faster, better handling, more comfortable and generally superior to its pre-war ancestor. It was Mercedes-Benz’s flagship model: stylish, exclusive and intended for a wealthy and discerning clientele that demanded superlative performance but were unwilling to sacrifice luxurious appointments and generously sized accommodation. Today the 300SE is among the most sought after of post-war Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
