1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC AMG European Touring Car – ex Schickentanz/Heyer
Chassis No. WDB10702612002394
In contrast to Daimler-Benz AG, which raced the Mercedes-Benz SLC in the World Rally Championship, AMG built a racing coupe for circuit competition. Hans Werner Aufrecht sought to triumph over Jaguar and Alpina-BMW in the European Touring Car Championship with the SLC. In its original guise, a standard 450 SLC tipped the scales at around 1690 kilograms. AMG succeeded in upping the output of the 4520cc V8 from the previous 160 kW/217 bhp to 276 kW/380 bhp; at the same time, the rated engine speed was increased from a modest 5000 to 6550rpm. Work on the AMG racing coupe was completed just before the first race of the 1978 season of the European Touring Car Championship in Monza, Italy. Notwithstanding this, the AMG drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz immediately secured a highly respectable fifth place on the grid, but it was in the car's very last European Touring Car Championship race at the Nurburgring circuit that the driver team of Schickentanz and Denzel finally scored the victory that Hans Werner Aufrecht had yearned so long for.
This stunning example is one of three ever built. The second was heavily crashed during a testing session in 1980, whilst the third resides in the Mercedes-Benz Works Museum in Stuttgart. Built by AMG for Clemens Schickentanz and Hans Heyer for the European Touring Car Championship and the 1979 Le Mans 24 hours, Coys is exceptionally proud to offer this historic racing car for sale at its spiritual home, the Nürburgring.
With period racing wins at the Nürburgring, Monza and Zolder combined with many other podiums, this car represents true touring car history. Considered by its current owner to be in excellent condition, this car was comprehensively rebuilt by its present owner to the highest of standards by Mercedes-Benz in Paris. Boasting a five litre, 380bhp AMG tuned Mercedes-Benz engine, AMG exhaust system, flywheel and camshaft, it comes complete with FIA HTP papers and is ready for serious competition. A future owner would be eligible for entry to the Le Mans Classic or any other important historic races or events around the world.
The steel, fibreglass and alloy body is finished in classic Mercedes-Benz silver. Whilst the interior has been detailed in Black with a Heinzmann fire system, VDO - Mallock Guages, Bosch electrical system and Momo-AMG steering wheel. Included in the sale is a new spare engine, a new limited slip differential, three BBS spare wheels, four wet tyres, brake parts and many other parts. A competent and historically important racing car offered today at an extremely realistic level.
