1956 Mercedes-Benz 220 S - Mille Miglia eligible
Registration Number: EU registered Chassis Number 180010-6507364
It is not always appreciated what a stir Mercedes-Benz road cars made in the 1950s. Leaving aside such obvious stars as the 300SL 'Gullwing', there were headlines like Magnificent Mercedes when a new saloon came out. It is not hard to see why: the company introduced new levels of build quality to even its most mundane models.
Take the 220S, here was a discreetly styled saloon with a top speed of 100mph when it was introduced in 1956, 100mph was beyond some sports cars. It was superbly assembled at a time when most saloons were of dubious quality and it had such features as servo-assisted brakes and an overhead camshaft engine.
It also basked in the reflected glory of Mercedes-Benz's legendary return to Grand Prix racing in 1954 (Fangio won back-to-back World Championships) and its winning of the 1955 World
Sports Car Championship. The kudos which surrounded the model range cannot be underestimated especially since Mercedes-Benz insisted on direct correlations between its road cars and competition cars: the low-pivot swing axle rear suspension, for example. This classic Mercedes-Benz was delivered new to Switzerland and upon its return to Germany, a no expense spared ground up restoration was carried out by a German specialist in 2006. The restoration costs amounted to €90.000!
The body was totally stripped to bare metal, partly shot blasted, repaired as necessary and painted in gleaming black. The engine has been revised, sealed, a new clutch was fitted, the carburettors were overhauled and a new stainless steel exhaust system was added. The gearbox received similar attention, the propshaft was replaced with a new item, the brake system was completely overhauled with all new parts including a new power assist unit. Further to the running gear, all axles
were overhauled, partly zinc plated or powder coated, new Koni shocks fitted as well as new tyres. The interior was completely retrimmed to original specification. The car is in museum quality condition and would suit a fastidious collector either for show or to participate in historic motor events, it is even eligible for the historic Mille Miglia. It comes with German paperwork and new TÜV with historical registration.
