Carrozzeria Riva, or Mario Riva & Sons, started in 1949 in Carzaniga Merate, Como. The range of work undertaken was eclectic, ranging from boats to buses to hearses, but the firm created a nice little line of ‘garden vans’ on the Fiat 500C chassis. Riva also maintained cars belonging to journalist and racer Giovannino Lurani Cernuschiand, and he occasionally asked Riva to build him a car, eg. the ‘Nibbio’ record car from 1935 as well as some Alfa Romeo-powered cars on Gilco tubular chassis. One Lurani design, built by Riva, won the Prize of Honour in the 1950 Lido di Venezia Concours d’Elegance. In the ‘50s Riva stopped making car bodies from scratch and instead concentrated on the repair and transformation of existing bodies.
This rare example of a Lancia Appia Giardinetta by Riva was found in ‘barnfind’ condition in 2014 and restored in 2015. Finished in blue and beige with delightful period ‘Martini’ graphics, the interior was restored with the original Lancia cloth. An interesting and very unusual example of a luxury commercial vehicle, and as such is decidedly collectible.
