HRDC Academy Eligible - Ex-David Coulthard/Carl Froch Goodwood/Silverstone
Introduced in 1956, the A35 replaced the highly successful Austin A30. The name reflected the larger and more powerful 34hp A-Series engine enabling a slightly higher top speed and better acceleration. Similar in appearance to the A30 except for a larger rear window aperture and a painted front grill with chrome horse-shoe surround, both had 13”” wheels and was offered as a two or four door saloon, ‘Countryman’ estate and van. The A35 was a successfully raced in its day and can still be seen today at historic race meetings.
This A35 was built for the current vendor by specialist Mike Curtis in 2016 for entry into the HRDC Academy racing series. The 1958 donor vehicle was stripped and chemically dipped to clean the shell for the race car build. Built to the HRDC Academy regulations, this car has all the correct optional additions that make it highly competitive, and easy to drive. The front and rear shocks have been manufactured by Peter Caldwell of Madison, Wisconsin to greatly improve the standard cars handling. Other engine and drivetrain parts have been upgraded within the regulations to ensure the car is as reliable as possible – there is a new fan, alternator, distributor, and the correct re-manufactured differential is fitted. The car has it’s HRDC Academy ‘Passport’ ensuring eligibility for all HRDC Academy races. The belts are in date, and the car is fitted with a bespoke Moto-Lita Alcantara steering wheel. The car will also come with a spare set of wheels.
The cars history is as unique and as special as any A35. Most notably of course, this car was the first ever racer to be driven by David Coulthard in the St Marys Trophy at the Goodwood Revival 2016. Driving the car at this years Silverstone Classic Celebrity Challenge was the world champion boxer Carl Froch, finishing well amongst the non-racers. Aside from its celebrity drivers, the car has featured regularly on the HRDC podium in both single and two-driver races over the last two years. To accompany the car, the historic racesuit worn and signed by David Coulthard during the Revival will be provided to the winning bidder. This is a rare opportunity to own an A35 racecar with genuine provenance and a special piece of history attached to it, and the new owner is sure to have a lot of fun over the coming seasons.
