The XK150 was available at first only in fixed and drophead coupé forms; the open roadster version didn’t appear until the following year. At 190bhp, the engine’s maximum power output was identical to that of the XK140, so performance was little changed. ‘Special Equipment’ and ‘S’ versions came with 210 and 250bhp respectively, the latter delivering an astonishing 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 136mph. This was achieved by the introduction of the Weslake-developed ‘straight-port’ cylinder head, high-compression pistons, triple 2” SU carburetors and twin electric fuel pumps. The car regularly recorded in excess of 130mph in magazine road tests. ‘The Jaguar XK150 is undeniably one of the world’s fastest and safest cars. It is quiet and exceptionally refined mechanically, docile and comfortable… we do not know of any more outstanding example of value for money,’ declared The Autocar.
The much-loved example offered here is a 3.4 litre ‘S’ variant as fitted with triple-carburettors mated to a manual/overdrive gearbox from new. Chassis ‘T831234DN’ was despatched to Continental Motors, New Jersey, USA in September 1958 and into the ownership of a Mr. W.G. Connell of Sewaren New Jersey.
Later being repatriated into the UK in 1991, the XK enjoyed a ground up restoration with the conversion to right-hand drive configuration. In current ownership now for 23 years, the XK has been an active participant in dozens of rallies and other events in the UK and abroad, including four MSA Euroclassics, two Prix des Alps, amongst many other touring and club events.
In between events the Jaguar has of course been kept in tiptop condition with visits to leading specialists such as CMC in Shropshire, and parts purchased as and when required. A further engine rebuild was carried out in 1997 by Les Trafford of Trafford Competition Engines in Tewksbury, and between June 1997 and March 2000 the car was fitted with many mechanical upgrades to improve its driveability for regular use. These included a Getrag five-speed gearbox conversion (with ratios almost identical to the original overdrive gearbox), uprated disc brakes, power steering, and a Kenlowe electric fan, whilst the limited-slip differential was rebuilt. We note the XK is fitted with chrome wire wheels and driver and passenger door mirrors. The original painted wire wheels, knock-off ‘spinners’, gearbox, and radiator are included in the sale.
In the last 12 months the Jaguar underwent a no-expense-spared ‘health check’ in preparation for last season’s event, to the tune of c. £5,000. Work was undertaken by specialist Grantham Bridge Motors and entailed a thorough inspection, service, and attention to the engine/ignition, steering, drivetrain, braking and numerous smaller items. A further £6,000 has been spent in 2020 on a cosmetic refresh, and as such externally the car presents as well as it drives.
Offered with a huge file of papers and photographs recording all works carried out over the last 20 or so years, and offered with a UK V5 and current MOT certificate, this is a wonderful opportunity to acquire an actively campaigned genuine XK150 ”S” which is on the button and ready for further adventures in the coming season.
