The Corvette Sting Ray needs no introduction, it is without doubt a car which symbolised America in the 1960’s and has always enjoyed a cult following. The Corvette Sting Ray has been described as one of the most desirable cars ever built, and has been applauded for its great style and engineering.
The Corvette Sting Ray was first introduced in 1963 and was a show stopper from day one. There have only been a handful of cars which have been able to create real excitement amongst the car industry during the 1960’s and the Sting Ray was undoubtedly one of them.
The specification for the Corvette was a totally new venture, primarily because GM were working with a completely new chassis frame. The overall design of the body was also very striking and Sting Rays up to 1963 had the classic split screen at the back, which was controversially taken out due to safety concerns. The Sting Ray was also designed to have a new independent rear suspension designed by Allard and Porsche driver, Zora Arkus-Duntov.
It was an all American car, but the engineering was by a man who had won his class at Le Mans and had a clear idea what a sports car should really be like. As a result all the Corvettes up to 1984 were using the same layout – a true testament to the cars brilliant design.
This fantastic Corvette Sting Ray was registered in 1965 to its lucky first owner in California. More recently the Sting Ray has enjoyed a comprehensive body-off restoration, having covered a mere 3,000 miles since being completed.
