Rare soft window example
912 Soft Window Targa production commenced in 1967 and were initially equipped with transparent plastic rear windows openable with a zipper. Later designated ‘Version I’ by the factory, these ‘soft-window’ Targas are now extremely rare, with about 200 currently listed in the 912 Registry. In September 1968, Christophorus magazine noted that with the soft-window “The safety hoop is permanent but you can achieve four variations around it, depending on whether roof and rear window are used or removed.” Take off the Targa top (fitting unfolded in the trunk) for a mega sunroof (originally called the “Targa Voyage”). Unzip the plastic rear window and you have a cabriolet with rollbar (originally called the “Targa Spyder”. You might leave the roof on and the back window down on blistering hot days, cold winter days, or even in a light rain. Button it up for complete enclosure in any weather. This rare Soft Window Targa (SWT) has in recent years benefitted from a comprehensive restoration. Treated as a ‘labour of love’, works began with disassembling the car, removing the engine, transmission and fuel tank. The car also received a complete window-out quality bare metal re-spray to original Irish Green colour. An engine leak down and compression test was done with great results, so a full tune up service, adjustment of the valves, and detailing the engine and transmission was completed. New clutch and shift bushings fitted with the CVs joints all rebuilt.
The interior is excellent and all original, even the carpets are amazing. All the rubber seals, even the Targa top seals were replaced and the soft window assembly was rebuilt. All the chrome, decos, bumper guards, lights and side markers are original.
Finished in Irish Green with black leather interior, what we have here is a very nice and containing its original interior, largely unmolested example of the rare 912 soft window Targa. Renowned for driving great having superior weight-distribution and handling compared to its slightly larger 911 counterpart, this particular car is no different. Described to drive great by its current owner, the car does not smoke, has no leaks, no accident damage nor rust.
Included in the sale are its books, service book included, alongside numerous invoices.
