With a 6.3 litre fuel injected V8 engine producing 300bhp at the wheels, the 600 was capable of over 120mph and 0-60mph in just 9.5 seconds, not bad for a car weighing some 7,0001b! There was a limited slip differential, servo steering and caliper brakes with vacuum servo at both ends.
Other amenities included hydraulically operated windows, sunroof, glass partition, boot lit, horizontal/vertical movement and backrest angles of seats, and fully automatic controlled air conditioning.
Not even the Rolls-Royce Phantom boasted such a compliment of goodies, so it is hardly surprising that the 600 cost a whopping DM56,500 at the time of its launch, this figure having risen to DM144,100 by the time production ceased in 1981.
The list of 600 Pullman owners is basically a list of the most wealthy and influential people in the world, from Queen Elizabeth II to Mao Tse Tung, including Elvis Presley and the Pope.
During their very long production life from 1964 to 1981, these cars were the predominant luxury competitors to Rolls-Royce, and for the later years such as this one, very few were built due to its no-expense-cut production style, and resultantly high cost! There were two basic models, the short wheelbase and long wheelbase, roughly five times as many short wheelbase were built. Today offering is even more special than the common LWB as it is a 6-door LWB of which only 124 examples were ever made, and what a splendid example it is. The superb rear compartment is opulently upholstered for four passengers with its beautifully maintained Mahogany Red leather seating and lavish wood cappings.
This example of one of the most imposing of all post-war cars appears to be in lovely original condition, of a kind which is hard to find today, especially a LWB with a powered partition to exclude the chauffeur from sensitive high powered discussions taking place in the rear! Its magnificent 6.3 litre V8, supple Automatic gearbox and exemplary ride quality make for extremely luxurious high speed cruising.
Presented wonderfully with Navy Blue paintwork, this example has been in the caring ownership of a Mercedes 600 Collector who has over the years acquired two Pullmans and one Grosser. Provided with an extensive service history where approximately €10,000 has recently been spent purely on parts form the Mercedes-Benz factory, this wonderful example has been used several times over recent years in weddings to chauffeur the bride and groom on their special day. The hydraulic and electrical systems are all said by the vendor to be in good working order, which comes as no surprise considering its recent history. The rear windscreen has recently been replaced and # 000753 was even taken to a mechanic and ex- 600 specialist at the Mercedes factory for a final check over and oil-leak repair. MOT’d and ready for use, this is a special opportunity to buy one of 124 LWB 6-door Pullmans ever produced.
