Maintaining Lancia’s unparalleled reputation for innovation in automobile design, the Fulvia saloon arrived in 1963, and two years later was followed by a 2+2 coupé on a shorter wheelbase. Though mechanically similar, the newcomer had all the visual presence its progenitor lacked. Tuned ‘HF’ versions provided increased performance, while for the style conscious there was the eye-catching Sport Zagato, characterised by one of the Milanese carrozzeria’s typically lightweight and aerodynamic bodies. Introduced in 1965 with the 1,216cc engine, the Sport Zagato was later offered with the 1,231cc, 1,298cc and eventually the 1,584cc HF unit. A five-speed gearbox was standard equipment from 1971. Production ceased in 1972. Lighter and more nimble than the standard Fulvia, the Sport distinguished itself in competition, particularly in long distance events – Fulvia Sport Zagatos scored highly in the Sebring 12 Hours and Daytona 24 Hours (where a Sport earned a class win in 1969). Ex-works HF rally cars aside, the Sport Zagato is the most desirable and collectible of all the Fulvias and undeniably one of the most striking designs of its era. Zagato is an independent coachbuilding company and total design center located northwest of Milan in the Terrazzano frazione of Rho, Lombardy, Italy. The confluence of the great names of Lancia and Zagato almost certainly guarantees performance, striking good looks and rarety which are al necessary ingredients for investment quality automobiles. Classic car insurers Hagerty International have identified these cars as one of the best growers in the market; “A rise of 16.53% for the Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato to an average of £29,075 is more indicative. This car was undervalued for a long time, and even less-than-perfect examples are doing well”.
This superb RHD Zagato, showing only 39,000 miles from new, was imported by our vendor a few years ago from the UK and treated to a bare metal respray in Burgundy Red by specialists, Dino’s Classic Autobody. The interior is beautifully original and the car is mechanically excellent. The registration of the vehicle onto eNatis is underway and can be completed by the vendor at no additional cost.
