The Mercedes-Benz SL (Sport Leicht) has been in production since 1954, with perhaps the most influential model being the W113 Pagoda of 1963. This second generation evolved from the 230 SL to 250 SL, finally becoming the 280 SL. The W113 was replaced by the W107 in 1971 and as the engines became bigger, the bodywork and weight of the cars also increased – as often happens in mid-life! Technical innovation improved the SL through the years, but it still managed to keep its fundamental character, and maintained the identity of an up-market quality sports car.
Its reputation went from strength to strength at a time when it was rare to see an episode of Dallas or Dynasty in the 1980s without an SL making a star appearance. The genius soft-top mechanism which folds down out of sight under a panel ahead of the boot lid gave the car a beautifully sleek, uncluttered appearance. The distinctive classic white SL presented here boasts, arguably, the best suited engine of the marque, the straight six. With a capacity of 2,800cc and coupled with the smooth automatic gearbox, it gives the car a lively 0-60mph performance coupled with a decent mpg especially when out on a run, where these cars effortlessly eat up the miles and are most at home. The car was supplied new, with the factory hard-top, on 10th April 1984.Recent expenditure of £7,000 at the SL shop in 2013 has brought the car up to an excellent condition. The classic white exterior complements the blue check interior beautifully (including rear seats).
Described as very well maintained, with interior, exterior and roof all in excellent condition, A188 XTX has covered just 84,000 miles from new. The car comes complete with a detailed history file, a variety of bills and receipts, as well as UK V5 registration and an MoT until May 2016.
