1986 BMW M5

One owner for 29 years

The M5 made its debut at Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1984. It perfectly offered the need for a larger car to carry the family with a full set of luggage, whilst providing supercar performance for the committed driver. Built by the Motorsport division of BMW from 1986, the first incarnation was hand-built on the BMW E28 series chassis, using the modified BMW M1 supercar engine which gave a huge 282BHP in 1986. Subsequently the M5 instantly became the fastest production saloon car in the world.

The first generation M5 was hand-built in Preussenstrasse/Munich prior to the 1986 Motorsport factory summer vacation. Thereafter, M5 production was moved to Daimlerstrasse in Garching where the remainder were built by hand. Production of the M5 continued until November 1988, well after production of the E28 chassis ended in Germany in December 1987.

With a total production of 2,191 units, the E28 M5 remains among the rarest regular production BMW Motorsport cars – after the BMW M1 (456 units), BMW E34 M5 Touring (891 units), and the BMW 850CSi (1510 units).

Coming from the third owner from new, the fantastic example you see is number 485 of only 589 examples made for Europe and pleasingly, this example has been  with just one owner for almost 30 years.

Delivered new to Metz in France, this fabulous super saloon has had a detailed restoration, which is supported by various invoices and photographs of the work completed. The M5 is finished in the traditional BMW colour scheme of Diamond Black metallic with a grey check cloth interior.

Described by our vendor as being in excellent condition in all respects, and supplied with the relevant title document, this is a stunning original example of one of the most iconic Q-cars of all time.
