Formerly the Personal Conveyance of Diana, Princess of Wales
Known as one of most influential female figures of this century, the late Diana, Princess of Wales was born ‘The Honourable Diana Frances Spencer’ on the 1st July 1961 in Norfolk. When in 1975 her father inherited his Earldom, she received the tile Lady Diana Spencer, following that she became Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales on her marriage to The Prince of Wales at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981.
As The Princess of Wales, Diana was known for her charitable work, and was in fact patron of over 100 charities, but with the pressures of Royalty taking its toll it was announced that her marriage was over and she was to separate. By 1994 after reducing the time spent working on her public life, and with a lesser need to travel with Royal Household vehicles the Princess knew exactly the car she wanted.
Her choice of an Audi Cabriolet would well have been due to the cars understated elegance combined with a powerful engine, said to have first impressed the Princess when she borrowed a cabriolet belonging to Viscount Linley’s wife Serena.
Very few cars are actually owned by the Royal Mews, apart from the limousines intended for State use, and most vehicles made available for ‘Junior’ royalty are provided by manufacturers hopeful of some beneficial exposure, and this Audi Cabriolet was no exception having been presented to her for her personal use by Dovercourt Audi of St Johns Wood.
With the Royal Mews not owning many cars apart from State vehicles, a few members of the Royalty were provided with personal cars by manufacturers direct, this is the same situation with the Audi we have on offer today.
This blue Audi Cabriolet remains registered as L541 GJD and is offered to auction after long term storage, having not been in the public eye for many years.
The vehicle was purchased by the current vendor in 2004 and used it as an everyday family car to approximately 2009 then placed it in storage, once the full importance of the vehicle became apparent. The vehicle has been captured in numerous press images showing the Princess stepping in and out of the Audi with the number plate clearly visible.
