It was at the 1988 British Motor Show that the sensational Jaguar XJ220 concept prototype was first revealed to the public, a lightweight two-seater with a mid-mounted V12 engine designed as a modern day successor to the XJ13 sports-racing prototype of 1966. With a 6.2 litre, quadruple overhead camshaft, four valve per cylinder, 500bhp motor developed by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, it was capable of mesmerising speed even by modern day standards.
The XJ220 benefitted from an FF Developments four wheel drive system and an immense but svelte bonded aluminium body designed by Keith Helfets clothing an aluminium/honeycomb monocoque body. It was the ultimate supercar, a limited edition, 200mph plus piece of pure automotive sculpture – the 220 part of the name denoted the targeted top speed. During testing in Italy by Jaguar, 213 mph was reached at the Nardo track, making the XJ220 the fastest production car in 1992. Just 275 cars were produced in all, and with a retail price of £470,000 when new, this made the Jaguar one of the most expensive cars of the 90’s.
The example presented today, number 098, was first registered in 1994. It was produced in the final year of production, and is the desirable Silverstone Green exterior colour with a beige interior. This example has covered just shy of 25,000kms and is in very good condition. The car comes with extensive history and an ample file of receipts. Considering the performance and heritage, this is an opportunity to own an iconic supercar at a fraction of the cost of its notorious 90’s rivals.
