Intended to spearhead Ford’s international rallying campaign, the Escort RS Cosworth, just like the Lancia Integrale and Subaru Impreza, was a Group A rally car for the road. The car actually consisted of a shortened version of the Sierra Cosworth RS Cosworth’s platform and was powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged longitudinally mounted Cosworth-developed engine driving all four wheels.
At its retail launch in 1994, two models were available, the ‘Club-spec’ standard car at £21,380 and the more optioned ‘Lux’ version. Power was up slightly from the Sierra RS Cosworth, at 227bhp, and performance consequently improved. A front air dam, flared wheelarches and an outrageous ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler, all necessary for the competition cars gave the Escort RS Cosworth a road presence that few cars could match. 7,145 cars were produced over a four-year period, and today this ‘cult classic’ is one of the most sought after of modern high-performance Fords.
The car we are offering here is a stunning example of the famous shape. Described as being in good condition throughout, the car does not claim to be a concourse winning example, rather, a drivable well-looked-after, and most importantly fast car. With a full service history, the car has been in the same ownership for the last 9 years. Within this time it has undergone extensive work carried out by Cosworth specialists to make it one of the fastest RS’s around. With an upgraded Turbo (Turbo Technics R209), 470c fuel injectors tuned by Jan Sport, aluminium fly wheel and an upgraded clutch as well as a rebuilt gearbox with all new bearings, an RS 500 intercooler, an upgraded aluminium radiator and a full stainless steel exhaust, fewer cars have received as much attention as this, a track-day lover’s dream! Presented in Ash Black with a Grey interior this RS also looks the part. Mot’d until April 2018, this Escort Cosworth represents excellent value for money and is sure to provide an enormous amount of fun both on the road and on the track.
