In 2000, Porsche introduced the 996 Turbo, equipped with four-wheel-drive and a 3.6-litre, twin turbocharged and intercooled flat-six producing 420bhp, making the car capable of 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds.
In 2002, the standard models underwent minor re-styling, which included switching to the Turbo-style headlamps and to a new front fascia. These were sometimes known as the Mk2 generation of the 996.
Although the Turbo is water-cooled, it is not the same engine that is found in regular 996s. The turbo engine can trace its ancestry back to the old air-cooled units and is directly related not only to the 996 GT3 but also the GT1 racer (3.2-litres and 600bhp!). The other 996 engines were a completely different design and had gasket problems that could lead to catastrophic failures, but not so the Turbo. This engine is very strong and can be tuned up to well over 500bhp.
First registered in 2002 this 996 Turbo, with the more desirable manual gearbox, is finished in silver with a contrasting black hide interior. Fitted with a number of options from new, the 996 has just enjoyed a major service and is ready for much more fast-road driving in 2020.
