Description

The SLS AMG was designed to be a modern, retro-look edition of the legendary 1950s 300 SL Gullwing. Designed by Mark Fetherston, the new Mercedes-Benz supercar adapted the feature of ‘wing’ doors that swing upwards with the help of gas struts – just like the doors of the original Gullwing.

The SLS AMG is an iconic vehicle that represented firsts, mosts, and lasts. It was the first Mercedes-Benz designed and built from scratch entirely by AMG, which was given a clean sheet to execute and build its own car design from the ground up. Upon its introduction the SLS AMG’s 571 PS M159 engine was according to AMG “the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine” ever produced.

The SLS AMG was also Mercedes-Benz’s last naturally aspirated engine. With the passing of the SLS AMG’s M159 monster engine, and the less potent version used in the C63 AMG (the lower output M156 version), Mercedes-Benz has no remaining naturally aspirated engines in its production lineup.

To quote one publication, “The years of the naturally aspirated V8 brutes are over, with Mercedes AMG adopting the downsizing trend.” However, Mercedes could not part with this remarkable engine entirely, so when it came to its GT3 race car, it elected to stick with its top of the line, naturally aspirated 6.3 litre engine.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, and sales commenced in mid-2010 in Europe and in mid-2011 in the United States.

Dubbed the SLS, for ‘Sport Leicht Super’, the car was developed by Mercedes-Benz and their in-house tuning and high performance outfit, AMG. Built as an extreme high-performance, front engine, two-seat luxury grand tourer, the SLS soon graced the covers of the motoring press upon its unveiling at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Available in both ‘Gullwing’ Coupe and soft-top Roadster versions, they offered sensational supercar performance with the typical Mercedes hallmarks of luxury and high build quality.

Finished in the striking colour combination of scarlet red with black leather interior, serviced, ‘on the button’ and complete with owner’s manual and handbook, this SLS has covered just under 75,000 kilometres from new. As striking as the original and a must have to any true Mercedes collector, it is as breath-taking to drive as is to look at.

Interested parties should note that VAT has not been paid on this car and will be applicable at the buyer’s local rate.
